SPORT IS helping to get pulses racing across the UK in more ways than one, according to new research which has revealed Brits are more likely to find someone attractive if they play sport.

A survey of more than 7,600 UK adults published by Decathlon in the Decathlon Activity Index, revealed that more than 1 in 2 (54%) admit they are more attracted to people who play a sport.

More than 1 in 3 (36%) said that they are more attracted to someone who exercises as they are likely to be more health conscious – a trait they find attractive.

Being healthy isn’t the only reason British adults are attracted to sports players, with more than 1 in 4 (26%) saying they are attracted to people with hobbies, while 25% consider people who play sport to be more physically attractive.

More than 1 in 5 (20%) find someone who has a skill desirable, while 12% admit they are attracted to the fact that people who play sport demonstrate the ability to commit to something.

Many (27%) felt dating someone who plays sport player could have a knock on effect on their own health, believing it would encourage them to be more active themselves.

The research further revealed the types of athletes we find most attractive, with gym goers taking the number one spot (39%).

More than 1 in 3 (36%) think swimmers are the most attractive, while 25% prefer people who run which appeared third on the list.

Nearly 1 in 5 find cyclists the most desirable, while 12% said footballers are who they find most attractive.

The majority (54%) said they would even be tempted to take up sport if they knew others deemed it attractive.

Joshua Gutteridge, sports manager at Decathlon commented: “Playing sport and staying active shows you are conscious about your health, improves muscle tone and are able to commit to something – and it is understandable that British find these traits attractive.

“Interestingly, a high proportion of people were more likely to take up a new sport if they knew it was deemed attractive, which is by no means a bad thing – anything that encourages us to exercise and stay active, even if – as in this case – it’s more of an unusual reason, can only be good. However, it is important to choose a fitness regime which you can enjoy and find a passion for. If you find something you genuinely enjoy you are far more likely to commit to it in the long term.”
